I've been thinking a lot about Hummingbird's Daughter while I read White Teeth. Do you all (at this point "you all" equals Berna and Strozier, but the others will catch up eventually) think that it is fair to say that in part, both novels deal with the issue of assimilation?
Urrea and Smith are very different writers, but I think I want to argue that both of them are answering the question (again, in part): What happens when country/dominant culture/society/the powers that be try to force people into a mold?
I am formulating a longer post in my mind, but wanted to at least get this out and start a conversation . . . so, whaddaya think?
