Point

Things have been mighty stressful around our house for the past year or so, beginning with my mom's first of two major spine-related surgeries last July. Sly B and I are not perfect people. We have tons of flaws. I believe that our biggest shared flaw is that we always -- ALWAYS -- think of ourselves second, if not last. For the most part, this flaw has resulted in lots of joy and love in our lives. Sometimes, though, it reaches back and bites us right in the ass.

Here's the thing: we are not an endless font. Breaking point, meet us.

I'm not sure what this means, but I'm kinda done not putting us first for a bit.

The BEST advise I have ever seen about this sort of thing was from someone who had one of those little emergency cards from the seat-back pocket of an airplane. In section about how to use the oxygen mask they had circled in bright red sharpie, the bit about putting YOUR oxygen mask on before attempting to help others.

If you don't make sure that you are fully functional before attempting to help others ... then you've simply added another number to the casualty list.

"Take care of yourselves first" is not selfish - it's necessary.
