There is no doubt that we live in a violent time. I think it's easy to put down a book and decide to quit reading. We are surrounded by violence and we react to the violence in our lives with intolerance, bigotry, and hate (pointed outside and in). Y'all seen the movie, "Crash?" (the more recent one, not the car crash/sex romp.) One of the characters is frustrated cuz she realizes that she's always pissed off, but isn't sure why or what she's pissed off about. She deals with the violence in her life (which is way beyond getting car jacked) by treating people of color like dogs. I think that's why we get hooked on cigarettes, drugs, drink, sex, food...it's a way to deal with the violence.
